A clouded window inside the eye
Behind the coloured part of the eye sits a clear lens that focuses light. With age — and sooner with diabetes, steroid medicines, injury or long sun exposure — this lens turns cloudy, like a frosted glass.
No drop or medicine clears a cataract. In surgery the cloudy lens is removed and a clear artificial lens is placed in its position, where it stays for life.
How cataract shows up
Blurred or hazy vision
Like looking through a dirty window, even with glasses.
Glare at night
Headlights and street lights dazzle or show halos.
Faded colours
Colours look dull or yellowish.
Changing glasses
The spectacle number changes often in a short time.
Trouble reading
Small print and phone text need more light than before.
Surgery when it gets in the way of your life
There is no need to wait for the cataract to "ripen". The right time is when reading, driving, work or moving about safely become difficult — and new glasses no longer help enough.
pain or redness in an eye with a cataract, coloured rings around lights with headache, or a sudden drop in vision. A very mature cataract can raise eye pressure.

Full eye examination
Vision, eye pressure, the retina and the optic nerve — so nothing else is missed behind the cataract.
Biometry
The eye is measured to work out the power of the new lens.
Sugar, BP and medicines
Bring your sugar and BP reports and a list of medicines, especially blood thinners.
Stitchless phaco surgery
Phacoemulsification
The cloudy lens is broken up and removed through a very small opening, on our phaco system. No stitches in most eyes.
A new lens
A foldable artificial lens (IOL) is placed inside the eye. You choose the type with the doctor.
Same-day, local anaesthesia
The eye is numbed with drops or a local injection. You go home the same day with drops and simple care instructions.
Dr. Swati has performed more than 10,000 cataract operations. She explains what to expect for your eye, including if you also have glaucoma or diabetes.

Is cataract surgery painful?
Most people feel no pain — at most some pressure. The eye is numbed first.
Can drops dissolve a cataract?
No. Surgery is the only treatment.
Will I need glasses afterwards?
It depends on the lens. With a standard lens most people need reading glasses; some lenses reduce the need for glasses. See the lens guide.
Can a cataract come back?
The cataract does not come back. Later, the thin layer behind the lens can turn hazy; a quick laser clears it.
